UTRGV Fall Relief Package & $1,000 CARES Cash Grants
What exactly is the Fall Relief Package?
  • Cash Grants

  • For Fall 2020, enrolled students who are eligible for cash grants (see below for eligibility criteria) will receive $1,000 in cash grants, which are funded from either the CARES Act or UTRGV funds. $500 will be issued directly to the student prior to the first day of the Fall semester, and $500 will be issued after the 12th class day.

  • UTRGV Tuition Relief

  • For Fall 2020, enrolled students who are eligible for tuition relief (see below for eligibility criteria) will receive up to $500 applied toward tuition (not fees) after current Federal and State aid (like Pell Grant and Texas Grant), scholarships, and other gift aid are applied. Tuition relief will be posted directly on the student’s account (see below for how to accept).

Who is eligible for the Fall Relief Package?
  • Cash Grants

  • Continuing undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for Cash Grants for Fall 2020 so as long as they (1) did not graduate from high school in or after May 2020, (2) are not international students, and (3) are not enrolled in fully online programs. To be eligible, students must enroll by Friday August 7th and meet certain financial aid eligibility requirements such as demonstrating Satisfactory Academic Progress, not being in default on a student loan, and other similar eligibility requirements. There is no minimum enrollment requirement.

  • UTRGV Tuition Relief

  • Students who graduated from high school in or after May 2020 and students in fully online programs who are in good academic standing and enrolled by Friday August 7th for the required number of hours are eligible for the UTRGV Tuition Relief program, which is not funded through CARES Act funds. Undergraduate students are required to enroll in 12 or more hours in fall 2020, and graduate students are required to enroll in 9 or more hours in fall 2020 (combination of fall module 1 and fall module 2) and be in good academic standing. International students, students not meeting certain financial aid eligibility requirements, and Cash Grant recipients are NOT eligible for UTRGV Tuition Relief.

If I am enrolled in all online courses for Fall 2020, do I qualify for CARES cash grants or Tuition Relief?

Many courses traditionally offered on campus/in person for Fall 2020 are being offered online due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, this logistical adjustment does not affect your degree program or type. For example, if you were enrolled in a traditionally on campus/in person program during Spring 2020 but are enrolled in all online courses for your program this Fall, your program is not considered “fully online” and you do indeed qualify for CARES cash grants.

Students enrolled in any of the following fully online programs DO NOT qualify for CARES cash grants but may qualify for Tuition Relief:

Can this be combined with other offers (for example Graduate Dean’s Scholarship)?

No, but if you have eligibility questions, please check with the following offices for clarification:

How will the UTRGV Tuition Relief for Fall 2020 be determined and paid?

Eligible undergraduate and graduate students (see “who is eligible”) who enroll for the required number of hours can receive up to $500 applied toward tuition (not fees) in Fall 2020, after current Federal and State aid (like Pell Grant and Texas Grant), scholarships, and other gift aid are applied. Any remaining tuition balance not covered by the above programs can be covered by UTRGV Tuition Relief, up to $500 in Fall 2020. Tuition relief will post directly on the student’s account.

Does the UTRGV Tuition Relief cover fees?

No, mandatory fees are statutorily mandated and are not covered by this program. Other fees such as course fees, lab fees, etc. are not covered by the relief award.

Are Fall Cash Grants or UTRGV Tuition Relief considered a loan?

No, neither the Cash Grants nor the UTRGV Tuition Relief awards are considered loans requiring repayment on default to UTRGV.

Do I have to accept UTRGV Tuition Relief?

Receiving this incentive is voluntary. Eligible undergraduate and graduate students (see “who is eligible”) who wish to receive UTRGV Tuition Relief must inform UTRGV by accepting and completing the award acknowledgement.

Do I have to accept the Cash Grants?

Acceptance of the Cash Grant is voluntary. If you do want to accept the grant, you may be required to complete and submit an attestation, to determine eligibility, if you have not already filed a FAFSA or TASFA for the 2020-2021 academic year. You will be informed via your UTRGV email if an attestation is required.

When will I receive the awards?

Cash Grants – Funds will be distributed to eligible students via direct deposit or check, with $500 issued prior to the first day of the Fall 2020 semester and $500 after the 12th day of class.

UTRGV Tuition Relief – Students eligible for tuition relief will first need to accept the award, and then the award will appear directly on your student bill.

How do I accept the UTRGV Tuition Relief ?

You must accept the offer by logging into my.utrgv.edu. Then:

  • Click on the ASSIST icon
  • Select the Financial Aid tab
  • Select - Award
  • Select - Award for Aid Year

No, there are no partial awards for less than the required number of hours for enrollment.

For the UTRGV Tuition Relief, what if I need less than the required number of hours to graduate in Fall 2020?

If a Fall 2020 graduation application has been filed (prior to fall census date) and DegreeWorks reflects less than the required number of hours needed to graduate, an exception may be made.

Do I get extra UTRGV Tuition Relief if I enroll in more than the required number of hours

No, the tuition relief maximum award is $500 for Fall 2020.

Do hours in graduate certificate programs count towards the required number of hours for UTRGV Tuition Relief?

Yes, enrollment in courses towards graduate certificate programs will be counted towards the enrollment requirement.

How is UTRGV able to do this?

Your ability to continue your education during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is of utmost importance to UTRGV. Campus operations have not yet returned to “normal” and continue to be disrupted due to the pandemic, which impacts you as students. For Fall 2020 there will be significant changes to the delivery of courses due to the ongoing pandemic. We have been continually assessing the impact of ongoing disruptions to campus operations and the significant changes to delivery of instruction, and have developed plans to assist you through these disruptions and changes. The Fall Relief Package is a result of this continuing assessment process. UTRGV is committed to helping you address the ongoing disruptions and changes, and financially assist you so you can continue to make progress towards your degree.

FAQs

We're putting even more money in your hands.

To help meet your changing needs and recognizing that everyone's needs might be different, we've revamped our Fall/Spring Relief Package for maximum impact.

Now, instead of tuition relief applied to your account, we're sending all eligible students a total of $1,000 in cash grants for Fall, which means you'll have more funds for the things you need most. We will also announce details of the Spring 2021 Relief Package later this Fall.

Each eligible undergraduate and graduate student enrolled for Fall 2020 (see FAQs) will receive not one, but two $500 CARES Act cash grants.

And we're also sending relief your way sooner, by making sure you've got $500 in your pocket before the start of the semester.

These cash grants will be automatically distributed to students by check or direct deposit.

A cash grant is FREE money - Not a loan. No strings attached. No need to pay it back.

And if you're not eligible to receive CARES Act cash grants, you may still benefit from our Tuition Relief Program.

Why are we doing this again?

While a lot has changed recently, one thing remains steady: our commitment to your success.

We want to make sure your focus stays where it's needed most: on completing your degree.

Follow our social media channels for announcements on a future Spring 2021 Relief Package.
