COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
UTRGV once again encouraged students, faculty, and staff to vote in the 2020 general election by providing timely information and serving as a polling place. More than 11,800 people utilized our facilities to cast their ballot!
Unveiled in September, Vaqueros United was established to engage the university in meaningful conversations on racism and social justice while promoting peace, equality, human rights, and social justice. The initiative, led by the UTRGV Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Student-Athletics Advisory Committee, starts with a pledge that all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to sign.
UTRGV organized a variety of campus and virtual events throughout the year to help encourage students, faculty and staff to fill out the 2020 Census.
What began as a tagline for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, turned into a university-wide rallying cry during the COVID-19 pandemic. How do Vaqueros react when uncertainty sets in? We rise to the challenge. We find the strength to keep giving our all. We rally together – even at a distance.

Summer Relief Package
Starting in Summer 2020, UTRGV invested university funds and offered new and current undergraduate and graduate students an incentive package to help them earn a degree while social distancing at home. The incentives for eligible students included up to $1,000 in tuition relief, among other things.
UTRGV provided students with even more financial support in Fall 2020 by giving all eligible students a total of $1,000 in CARES cash grants. Students could use the grants for personal or education-related expenses during the pandemic.

The campus will be a 64,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility on 6.3 acres gifted by the City of Harlingen. The early college high school, expected to open Fall 2021, will offer students a direct path to a bachelor’s degree with a focus on academic core, engineering, computer science, or education.

Under the program, a freshman who starts Fall 2020 and takes 15 hours per semester (excluding summer school) is more likely to graduate in four years and save more than $7,000 compared to a student taking 12 hours.
Did you know: The UTRGV School of Medicine, through UT Health RGV, continues to play a major role in the state and regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, the school launched the first of what would eventually be four drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites across the Rio Grande Valley. By April, the SOM developed an in-house diagnostic lab specifically for COVID-19 testing.
